# Where to run Rakumux

> Rakumux runs on your laptop, but your agents keep working when it runs on a remote machine.

Rakumux runs anywhere you have a terminal: on your laptop it works fully, with nothing else to set
up. But a coding agent can work for an hour on one task, and on a laptop it stops when the lid
closes, the laptop sleeps or the network drops.

**We recommend running Rakumux on a remote machine.** Its background server owns your sessions, so
on a machine that's always on, your agents keep working while you're away. Connect from any
computer over SSH, and check on them from your phone.

## Your options

| | Your laptop | Your own server | A Fly Machine | A Fly Sprite |
| - | - | - | - | - |
| Agents keep working when your laptop closes | No | Yes | Yes | While it runs: it pauses when idle |
| You pay for | — | The server | Every second it runs | What it uses; little while paused |
| You connect with | — | SSH or mosh | `fly ssh console` | Rakumux, from here |
| Setup | Install | Install | A Dockerfile and a volume | `N` in Rakumux |

## The same everywhere

* **One install.** The same command installs Rakumux on any macOS or Linux x64 machine, and the same
sessions, keys and agents work there.
* **Many windows.** Every SSH login, terminal and phone shows the same sessions, live. Closing a
window or losing the connection never stops one.
* **From your phone.** Sign in on the remote machine and turn on the Feed: its sessions, their
chats and the Feed show [on rakumux.com](https://rakumux.com/docs/account/feed.md#your-sessions-on-the-web) in your phone's
browser. Or use the phone app over [Tailscale](https://rakumux.com/docs/phone/remote-access.md).
* **After a restart.** When Rakumux next starts, it brings back the sessions that were running,
with Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode in the same conversation ([Recovery](https://rakumux.com/docs/guides/recovery.md)).
