# AI naming

> Give generated session names something better, with your own AI key.

A session you didn't name gets a better name the first time it settles, when its program goes idle
or finishes a task. Rakumux sends the session's recent commands and screen text to your AI provider
and renames the session with its suggestion. Names you choose are never replaced.

AI naming is optional and uses your own key, with **Anthropic** or **OpenAI**. Without a key,
sessions keep their generated names.

## Add a key

Put your key in `~/.rakumux/config.json`:

```json theme={null}
{
  "anthropic_api_key": "sk-ant-…",
  "ai_primary_provider": "anthropic"
}
```

or set the `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` or `OPENAI_API_KEY` environment variable before starting Rakumux.
With an OpenAI key, `openai_model` picks the model.

| Key in `config.json` | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `anthropic_api_key` | Your Anthropic API key |
| `openai_api_key` | Your OpenAI API key |
| `ai_primary_provider` | `"openai"` to use OpenAI when both keys are set; otherwise Anthropic is used |
| `openai_model` | The OpenAI model to use (default `gpt-4o-mini`) |

> [!NOTE]
>
> The request goes from your machine straight to the provider you chose, under your account with
> them, and their terms apply. Rakumux itself doesn't receive it.
